日本文化において、紙を折るという行為には、魂を清め悪霊をはらう、という意味がある。折ることで精神の集中が高められ、和紙で折られた紙飾りなどが祭祀の儀礼に用いられて来た。日本人には誰でも、子どもの頃折り紙で遊んだ経験がある。その経験には、幾何学的な繊細さや、 直感では形作れない丁寧さといった美意識の種があるのではないだろうか。

現在も手書きで描かれる和文の資生堂書体は、美意識を身体的に伝承するカリキュラムとなっている。資生堂書体で書かれた「美」の漢字を、一枚の紙で折ることで、「美」を拓くことができるだろうか？　折り紙の理論を用いて数学的な「美」の再構築を試みている。

In Japanese culture, the act of folding paper carries a deeper meaning: it is believed to purify the soul and ward off evil spirits. Through folding, concentration of the mind is heightened, and paper decorations folded from washi paper have long been used in ceremonial rituals. Every Japanese person has likely experienced playing with origami as a child. In that experience, could there be the seeds of an aesthetic sense—geometric delicacy and a meticulousness that cannot be shaped through intuition alone?

The Shiseido calligraphy font, still hand-drawn today, has become a curriculum that transmits aesthetic awareness physically. Could we unfold the kanji for “beauty” (美), written in the Shiseido font, by folding a single sheet of paper? The project attempts to reconstruct the mathematical “beauty” using the theory of origami.
