Since 1920, the design of "Shiseido Karakusa" has been featured in Shiseido's products and advertising campaigns. Representing the vitality of plants and their infinitely expanding possibilities, this design has continuously evolved in style throughout different eras and under the hands of various designers. It serves as a symbol of Shiseido, both in the present and for the future, continually polished and refined. The "Shiseido Karakusa Art Exhibition" approached the concept of "Shiseido Karakusa" from various angles and presented it in an exhibition.
In this exhibition, we showcased original artwork and production processes of "Shiseido Karakusa," created by the engraver Marehide Susuki. It was the first public unveiling of these pieces. Alongside Susuki's intricate craftsmanship, a collection of valuable products featuring "Shiseido Karakusa" was also displayed.
Furthermore, we aimed to create an inclusive exhibition that allows visitors to experience "Shiseido Karakusa" through various senses. This included the presentation of original hand-scrolling artwork, audio guides that read out captions, braille displays, bilingual signage, the creation of bookmarks using offcuts of paper printed with the Karakusa pattern, a scent testing corner, and tactile plaster reliefs of Karakusa. Through these efforts, we provided opportunities to engage with "Shiseido Karakusa" in a multi-sensory manner.
