PENTAWARDS 2024 Bronze Award for "KOMtainer"
We are pleased to announce that our project “KOMtainer” has won the Bronze Award at the “PENTAWARDS 2024.” Established in Belgium in 2007, “PENTAWARDS” is an international product design competition that has been a hallmark in the field for nearly 20 years. With over 2,000 entries submitted this year, “KOMtainer” was selected among the many.
About “KOMtainer”
Since ancient times in Japan, where rock salt resources are scarce, salt has been made from seaweed. Therefore, Japanese regarded salt and kelp as blessings from the sea that are indispensable to their daily lives. During the design process, we discovered that kelp, when soaked in water, can be shaped similarly to treated leather. The exterior made solely from kelp offers a powerful, natural texture. The entire container is made from edible materials, aimed at minimizing environmental impact. This project explores new ways to utilize traditional Japanese ingredients while contemplating a sustainable future.

This project was inspired by Japan’s unique culinary culture, and I am grateful that our endeavor to uncover new value through material research was recognized. We will continue to pursue new research and challenges in package design to promote a sustainable future."
